Whether through gig work, remote work, or platforms such as Uber,
new technologies are reshaping the very fabric of employment
relations. This handbook offers a comprehensive, international
overview of how institutions, countries, and legal systems are
responding to the technological disruption of the work world.
Chapters outline the reform agendas driven by the International
Labour Organization and the European Union and detail the public
policy debates, litigation, and legal reforms that technological
innovation has triggered around the world. This volume provides a
post-pandemic assessment of how digitalization is affecting
employment and employment relations and contextualizes current
technological disruption with a long-term view of how labour and
employment law could evolve further.
The contract of employment provides in many jurisdictions the legal
foundation for the employment of workers. This book examines how
the development of the common law under the influence of
contemporary social and economic pressures has caused this contract
to evolve. International employment law experts provide a
comparative study of the contract of employment across three
closely related common law jurisdictions: the UK, Australia and New
Zealand. Adopting a thematic approach, they analyse the key facets
of the common law of employment such as who is an employee, the
implied duties of employees and the restraints on employee
mobility. Examining the interaction between common law and domestic
statutory law and the politics and labour relations systems, this
book considers the legal variations for each jurisdiction and its
response to new developments in employment. It addresses the
capacity of the common law to respond to contemporary developments
such as the `gig' economy and the increasingly intrusive
surveillance of employees, both at work and in their private lives.
Insightful and contemporary, this book will appeal to students and
scholars of employment and contract law as well as those studying
comparative law more widely. Practitioners involved in employment
policy or employment litigation will also benefit from the wealth
of up-to-date knowledge on common law trends and developments.
This anthology of literary and dramatic works introduces writers
from across Asia and the Asian diaspora. The landscapes and time
periods it describes are rich and varied: a fishing village on the
Padma River in Bangladesh in the early twentieth century, the slums
of prewar Tokyo, Indonesia during the anti-leftist purge of the
1960s, and contemporary Tibet. Even more varied are the voices
these works bring to life, which serve as testimony to the lives of
those adversely impacted by poverty, rapid social change, political
suppression, and armed conflict. In the end, the works in this
anthology convey an attitude of spiritual and communal survival and
even of hope. This anthology presents the complex dynamic between a
diversity of Asian lives and the universalized concept of the
individual "human" entitled to clearly specified "rights." It also
asks us to think about what standards of analysis we should employ
when considering a historical period in which universal human
rights and civil liberties are considered secondary to the
collective good, as has so often been the case when nation states
are undergoing revolutionary change, waging war, or championing
so-called Asian values. This book's use of the term Global Asia
reflects an interest in rethinking "Asia" as more than an area
determined by national borders and geography. Rather, this book
portrays it as a space of movement and fluidity, where societies
and individuals respond not only to their local frames of
reference, but also to broader ideas and ideals. Many of the works
anthologized here are the subject of scholarly analysis in the
companion volume Human Rights and the Arts: Perspectives on Global
Asia, also published by Lexington Books.

My, how Duckie the Stepchild must like this weather! There he was
now, and his father and his mother and all his relatives. All just
letting the water run off their backs and having a grand time. But
Father Wyandotte and all his family were sticking pretty close to
the coops. Funny how ducks liked water and chickens didn't, all but
the Gold Rooster on the top of the barn. He never seemed to mind it
a bit. Marmaduke looked for him up in the sky, but he was almost
hidden by the rain and the gray mist, and stood there on his high
perch, swinging from East to North, and back again.
